Bose are so over rated. I have a pair of Studio Precision 8 reference monitors that I use for multi track audio recording but also for entertainment. At a little less a twelve hundred dollars these 2x280 watts powered monitors sound crystal clear and can make the air move. Even movies sound great. I would rather have great stereo with movies than mediocre surround sound with lesser speakers. I want to feel sound not just hear it. Cant have real surround sound with out full frequency satellites.

Well it's a horn loaded design, which means instead of the speaker facing the open air, it's mounted internally in an expanding tunnel. This matches the driver to the air, meaning very high efficiency, but the tunnel also serves as an air brake, meaning you have bass that slaps like a kick drum and stops on a dime, no muddy overhang whatsoever, and very little harmonic distortion. The frequency response is flat to 30Hz on the 24" and 20Hz in the 36" (won't fit through a door) version.

With horn loaded subs, you have to corner load them to get the best results. Outside, you would prob. . find this sub dropping off about 60Hz, but indoors, room gain kicks in and gives ruler flat response. I will have to build one myself. After all the best judge is the ears of the listener, and you are right about the skill of the builder. Any air leaks will drastically reduce performance! also this sub is big compared to the fathom. 15" driver, 36" x 36" x 24" enclosure.

All of those Bose systems, first of all, are very, very cheaply made. A simple $1000 4-speaker system ran off a relatively inexpensive aftermarket deck+1 10 in. subwoofer (preferrably 2 pairs of Hertz Dieci 165 coaxial speakers, a JL Audio 10 in. Powerwedge Max subwoofer system, and a Kenwood deck), would destroy any Bose car system.

Better yet, for $1800 (which is about how much the Bose option in many luxury cars costs), a system with Hertz Dieci 165 component speakers as fronts, Dieci coaxials as rears; both powered by a Concept 4-channel amp, + a JL Audio 10 in. W1v2 sub powered by a Concept mono amp, would wipe ANY Bose car system off the face of the earth (if not destroy any home Bose system).

BTW Mercedes doesn't use Bose anymore; they now use Harmon/Kardon. Also, how does Gucci use Bose?

Bose approaches those companies first. Bose markets their products very, very well, and having their stuff being associated with high-cost luxury items is just another feather in their cap.

WATCH THIS VIDEO! It proves Bose's Lifestyle 48 is overpriced and out of date. Watch the "Bose Lifestyle 48's Worst Nightmare" video, too. It shows how their small speakers are incredibly flawed performance-wise.

Don't fall for marketing. Just because it's more expensive doesn't mean it's better.
